A front door sets the rhythm

Panels, glazing and hardware give an entrance its character. Start with the proportions of the opening and the surrounding wall, then consider how much visual detail is needed.

A solid panel and a glazed section create different relationships between light and privacy. Handles, knockers and finishes are easier to choose when the overall composition is settled.

Give the opening room to work

Hinged, sliding and folding arrangements move in different ways. Consider where the panels go, how the route through the opening works and what happens to the nearby furniture.

A wide opening is not the only measure that matters. The day-to-day access panel, the handle position and the space needed around the track or threshold can make a large difference to how a door feels.

Resolve the junctions

A door meets the floor, the wall and often an outside surface. Those junctions deserve as much attention as the colour of the frame. A threshold should be discussed in the context of the specific building.

Hardware, weather detailing and installation requirements need to be considered together. Confirm the proposed arrangement with the responsible installer rather than relying on an inspirational image as a technical specification.
